Snarky Puppy Guitarist Mark Lettieri Rocks: “Blockheads” [VIDEO]

Way back in another era, when bands with unwieldy names like “Mahavishnu Orchestra” walked the earth, we used to call this sort of music “jazz-rock fusion,” before the term got applied too broadly to any music that sounded “jazzy.” But this live studio jam is definitely the best kind of old-school jazz-rock.

Perhaps those side windows are completely opaque instead of just being heavily tinted. That would be perfect for a creationist perspective on the Grand Canyon.

These tech executives are impenetrably clueless about this stuff. Most of these guys were raised in super-privileged environments and have little real-world experience with the forces they’re toying with, but they do have a childish and simplistic understanding of “freedom of speech” combined with a total absence of any responsibility for what their “social media” tools are actually doing to society.

What we’re finding out in real time with this shit is just how appallingly large the fraction of US society is that just aches to be a 21st century version of the ‘good Germans’ that abetted the Nazis back in the day.

At least 70% of the ruling class appears to fall into this category, and 40+% of everyone as well.

Mahavishnu Orchestra was one of things that got me into progressive music, after that I really lost interest in radio rock to a large extent.

Then I hung out with a bunch of jazz majors at Indiana University in Bloomington who got me hooked on the hard stuff

Speaking of major appliances.

When I moved into this place I had to buy a dishwasher because the old one was defunct, and found a pretty nice Maytag for a good price.

Years later, the latch on the door partially broke and it couldn’t be closed all the way, so it couldn’t be turned on.

Long story short, the part needed to fix it was supposed to cost $200, which is bad enough (it was part of a whole module thing and the latch couldn’t be fixed by itself), but then I got a call yesterday and they can’t even get that part any more.

So now I get to buy a new dishwasher, and I can’t tell you how happy that makes me.

I just bought a Bosch. I recommend it. Stay away from Kitchen Aid. I bought a high-end KA in 2014 and the dishes were just as dirty at the end of the cycle as they were when I put them in! Being a conservative would be a serious handicap for a working scientist. Setting aside blatant absurdities like creationism, there is still the conservative habit of believing what you want to believe (which is the exact opposite of science).

30 years ago, I was the second best dishwasher at the best restaurant in Portland, OR. The best dishwasher was Mr. w. Seriously, he wrote the book on it. At the request of the restaurant’s owner, a former college professor. Now I am washing Thai food off of dishes, for $12 an hour. Not enough hours yet, but more next week.

There’s also the inability to accept uncertainty, and not knowing. Science is about desperately needing to know, while accepting that you may not ever know.

Yeah, but I think that’s more to do with not accepting not knowing. I heard many times from Conservatives that “Science is always changing its mind*. I’d rather have the certainty of the Bible!”

*Science doesn’t ‘change its mind’. You refine your conclusion with new data, or disprove a previous conclusion, but your conclusions are all couched in uncertainty, the knowledge that better data may disprove them. I can’t imagine believing that the ‘certainty’ of something with no proof is better. I’d always see the lack of proof as a larger lack of certainty.

Argh. This reminds me of a friend who died last Saturday of stomach cancer. He was a volunteer at the Arizona Museum of Natural History, regularly lectured visiting school kids on hominid skulls, tangled with creationists online, did a bunch of YouTube videos on creationism that now outlive him, and was generally a decent guy. And oh, yeah, he used to go on regular archaeological digs in the Mogollon Rim country, finding all sorts of really cool fossils that are WAY older than 6,000 years. His memorial is on Wednesday at the Arizona Museum of Natural History. God, I am gonna miss Bill, he was one of a kind.

Speaking of major appliances.

So now I get to buy a new dishwasher, and I can’t tell you how happy that makes me.

I recommend a Bosch.

I purchased a “good” Maytag dishwasher from Lowes using my company reward card. As I was installing, I noticed the typical design…not very impressive. It turns out the control module was defective. I returned it and paid a little more for a Bosch. That baby was as SOLID of an appliance I had ever seen. The detail with the installation package and hookup was next level. Turned it on and the only way to tell it was running was the red light showing on the floor. Best cleaning dishwasher I have ever used.

I’m extremely pleased with my purchase. It’s been 6 mo. without a hiccup.

If he keeps true to form, he’ll either present the announcement in a stupor as he reads from a script, or he’ll choose to go off-script in a rant about how this so much more awesome than Obama failing to capture OBL and how he totally deserves to get all the credit for giving the order. Iran was informed by sources in Syria that Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed, two Iranian officials told Reuters on Sunday.

“Iran was informed about Baghdadi’s death by Syrian officials who got it from the field,” one of the officials said. The second Iranian official confirmed it.

They don’t have any choice. The GOP has become a cult of personality centered on Trump. If they renounce him, their own voters will view them as traitors to Dear Leader, and they will get slaughtered in the election. As long as they stick with Trump through November, 2020, the ones in deep red districts (which is most of whom are left) will survive.

So, a serious question.

I’m going to have to swap computers soon - my trusty old Vaio is on it’s last legs after seven years of loyal service.

I’ve got a line on a desktop PC that’s got Windows 10 Home installed as its OS. Any Lizards here using Windows 10 and what do you think about it? I know I could install Ubuntu (the OS I currently use on my Vaio) on it easily enough, but how is the Windows 10 OS? Any good? Or is it hot garbage?

Gonna take a quick run to the store - tomorrow’s a holiday here and everything’s closed, so I wanna grab a couple of things.

I’m sure that many of them think that Trumpism is a passing phase, and they can rebuild. And maybe they can; look at how quickly the GOP bounced back after the fiasco of the Bush Administration. Personally, I think the GOP has become a fascist party, and a Trumpist like a Kobach or Donald Trump Jr will win the nomination over a mainstream GOP candidate, who, lets face it, are stuffed shirts with nothing to offer non-billionaires. Fascists at least deliver the transgressive thrills of open bigotry and hate.

From black folk on social media.

I learned about it maybe 7 or 8 years ago, from Ta-Nehisi Coates’ blog at The Atlantic. (that’s also where I learned about late 1800’s massacres in Wilmington and New Orleans, the last big battles in the South’s campaign to undo reconstruction-era progress and fully solidify Jim Crow.)

OK, I’m back.

The (apparent) death of al-Baghdadi has finally hit the news here, and the general consensus is that if true, it probably won’t stop ISIS….but a struggle for succession might well slow them down a bit, unless al-Baghdadi had a clear and unambiguous line of succession. The most optimistic scenario as per Czech terrorism analysts? ISIS tears itself apart in a war of succession.

Of course, with the caveat that he is, in fact, actually dead this time.

I agree, but I’d also argue that they’re keeping with him for another reason: “passing the buck.” I have no doubt that the votes exist right now in the Senate to boot his ass today. But they don’t want that, they want to drag this out until next November so they can put the blame for his being removed from office on the voters. The “moderates” will argue that he just wasn’t popular enough to survive, while the nutters will talk about “stolen elections” and accuse the Dems of all sorts of chicanery to defeat him.

re: #205 goddamnedfrank

I believe this “sunk cost” excuse for Trump supporters is false and a red herring. The main reason Trump supporters remain loyal is because they are evil.

Here is my definition of evil:

Evil is defined as the desire and ability to dominate and eventually eliminate other human beings who are culturally and racially different than you are. Evil is the attempt to ignore or refute the reality of actual discrimination, domination, and elimination of other people by political leaders and corporations who share your own sense of prejudice. The USA is full of evil people including many in my own Southern located immediate family.

This is a war of good vs. evil. Evil is currently winning. It will be a decades-long war. Eventually good has to win. The other outcome is too horrid to think about.

The Trump Effect in action.

Provided it’s true, taking down the leader of ISIS would have been a very big deal. Remember the reaction when Obama announced the killing of bin Laden? It was important, and was handled with solemnity and seriousness.

This one could have been the same, but for that fucking schlub in the White House and his propensity to try and make every single thing he does sound like the most awesome and important thing ever done by a president. If he learned to shut the fuck up about himself for a minute, this killing would stand out as a pretty major accomplishment.

But due to his need to blab about fucking everything, it’s just another gag in his ongoing, third rate standup routine. Lost in the noise. Try the fucking veal.

This will be good for one news cycle. Maybe.

This is a guy whose previous church applauded him when he “confessed” to assaulting Jules Woodson.

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the ruthless commander of ISIS, has named a successor to replace him at the helm of the terrorist organization, Abdullah Qardash of Tal Afar, a predominantly Sunni Muslim city in northwestern Iraq. The appointment was announced on 8 August, via ISIS’s semi-official news agency, Amaq. It came as little surprise to jihad-watchers across the globe, given Abu Bakr’s deteriorating health since his most recent recorded address in April, he is believed to be suffering from limb paralysis—according to the Iraqi Ministry of Interior—sustained from shrapnel wounds inflicted during ISIS’ last battle in Hajin on the Euphrates River in Syria.

From Mark Hetfield, President and CEO of HIAS—the charity targeted by the sick MAGAT who killed 11 innocent people a year ago today

One year ago today 11 people were murdered while praying in the three congregations then housed in the Pittsburgh Tree of Life synagogue, including Dor Hadash, a HIAS partner congregation that had celebrated a refugee Shabbat with HIAS just days earlier. This was the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in the history of the United States. The shocking connection between HIAS and the shooting was made by the white supremacist murderer who said he wanted to murder Jews because HIAS had been bringing “invaders to kill (his) people.”

Hate speech and the violence that it brings is why our hearts are still broken today. We remember the Pittsburgh shooting with great pain and sorrow and we hope the memories of those who were killed will be for a blessing, yihiyu zichronam l’vracha.

Read my reflection on the one-year commemoration of the Pittsburgh shooting on the HIAS blog.

hias.org

What happened a year ago was a wake-up call. We must stand with all refugees today, but we must stand against hate in every form for every day forward. Because we must wake up to a better world.

Thank you for standing with us and with our Pittsburgh partners in welcome: Jewish Family and Community Services of Pittsburgh, Congregation Dor Hadash, and Temple Sinai.

And if Trump could bring himself to make a simple, dignified announcement, lauding our soldiers and IC folks, THEN move on to thanking the countries that let us fly in and do it, and then turn it over to maybe the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, or the head of JSOC, or something, he’d get respect for it.

You know, like Obama did when we got bin Laden.

But he can’t. He can’t stop himself from making it all about him, and thanking Putin ahead of our own people who risked their lives doing this, and declaring this the biggest victory in the history of victories.

It’s a total mess on both coasts right now, but California is getting the worst of it by far.

So of course Trump decides to botch the announcement that the US got ISIS terrorist number 1. Baghdadi.

Ok. Good.

So why thank Russia first? Even before our own troops? And why then post a photo of Trump staring off at something with key military advisers two hours after the events took place? Staged photo, thanking Russia before our troops, and then claiming that ISIS and Baghdadi were somehow a bigger get than OBL and al Qaeda?

Baghdadi isn’t the global terrorist number 1. That has been Zawahiri for some time now.

What else did we learn? Trump didn’t inform the Gang of 8 - House/Senate leaders on both sides of the aisle. He told only his fellow GOP bootlickers, all while claiming that Dems would leak details? This is a total fuckup of policy and practice, but the GOP and Trumpists will claim that it’s how it has to be done.

None of this will stop Trump from being impeached however.

re: #331 stpaulbear

I know some people have issues with 10 updating without warning while you’re in the middle of something, but that’s only happened to me once. I usually get a notice asking if I want to delay.

This was a real problem with the first versions of W10. There were layers and layers of stupid baked into the the updating system and it took maybe 2.5 years to get something set up that wasn’t actively hostile. The last two major versions of W10 do a fairly good job of telegraphing that there is a mandatory update coming and negotiating with you on the timing. The one scenario that’s still a little painful is if you reboot and there’s a patch waiting - it will install and you’ll get the worst six words in Windows “Do not turn off your computer.”

I’ve come to the point that overall I find it okay. If you’re used to Windows 7 there are a few extra hoops to jump through to organize it in basically the same way (you can’t drag things into and out of the Start Menu the way you used to, but the same tasks can be accomplished with a few more clicks) and they’ve gotten most of the stupid advertising out of the OS.

The important thing in a new general-use computer is not the OS (it’s all W10, anyway), but to make certain the hard disk is an SSD and a decent size - by now most are that way but you’ll still find cheap systems with the old spinny disks or smaller than 100 GB.

If all you’re going to do is browse the web or do basic application work, Linux is an option, but there are two things to keep in mind if you’re new to it. If you buy an actual PC from anywhere it will come with Windows on it because of Micro$oft monopoly powers, so you’ll only save money if you’re assembling your own computer from components. And there is an amazing diversity of Linux desktop interfaces - it’s truly amazing what’s out there but it can take a little searching to find one you like. Start with Mint for something windows-y. Ubuntu is the big desktop brand but I haven’t liked their main interface… ever. (Fair warning, I hate Macs, so YMMV.)

re: #367 Dr Lizardo

The desktop I’ve got my eye on has a 500 Gb HDD. I suppose I could replace it with an SSD, which might be a good idea.

Here’s the rundown:

RAM Memory: 4 gigabytes

It’s a fairly typical strategy to have a smaller SSD for the boot disk and commonly used programs, and a larger HDD for storage. I do that on my home computer, but I find myself wishing for all SSD sometimes.

4 GB RAM is bad. 8 is the minimum I would put in W10, 16 is the sweet spot, and anyone that vaguely considers themselves a power user may benefit from 32. 4 GB was merely enough for Vista, and I wouldn’t have recommended it for 7 or 8. (My computer, with 2 browsers open, is idling at 6.3 used.)

Assuming that’s a separate video card and not integrated, are you getting a video card for additional video outputs or for extra video horsepower? If it’s extra 3d performance you want this is probably too old and slow to be what you’re looking for. If it’s integrated or you just want to plug in more monitors, that’s fine.

Sadly, not a surprise. There’s a significant cultural divide between the former West and East Germany. The former DDR is the AfD’s electoral stronghold.

West Germans, although not necessarily always models at integration and tolerance, have been living, working and attending school with immigrants since the first guest workers started arriving in the 1960’s.

East Germans only knew Vietnamese or North Korean guest workers who lived in barracks and were sent home after they were done. Their first taste of immigrants only came after 1989 and was not always positive.

It’s right there in the Bible—“To the victor belong the oils.” Checkmate, tofu-eater.

I’m not in any way praising Baghdadi, but honestly, is blowing yourself up REALLY a cowardly way to die? I know we want to portray him as a pitiful, weak guy who talked a brave game but was actually a snivelling coward when his own time came, but hes been trying to inspire followers around the world, to, you know, blow themselves up to kill us. So, I’m not sure how having him out the same way would be so demoralizing to his followers.

To me, the better put down is, he killed his children. Kill yourself, fine. But your KIDS? What kind of a monster kills his own children?

Schiff said on ABC that unlike bin Laden raid, the Gang of Eight was not notified, which he contended is important for administration to do so it can say it notified Congress especially if things go wrong

Here’s the video with Schiff. I stopped watching when it went to the panel.

Find the common denominator:

Masada
Jonestown
Waco
Baghdadi

Trump will want this to be The Big Story from now till November 2020, but it won’t even still be The Big Story TOMORROW, because of the news/media/politics environment he created. It’ll be like every time he gave a speech that WASN’T an off-prompter rant - he’d get to be President for maybe a day, then he’d fuck it up.

And now, with the revelations coming thick and fast on the impeachment front, something will come out and he’ll react to it and make THAT The Big Story.

Another thing that’ll almost certainly happen? He’ll overdo the embellishment, and some DoD official, pinned to the wall by reporters, will admit that it’s not really true. Trump will go apeshit, and he’ll fucking release the video feed of the raid.

Dollars to donuts, that’s gonna happen.

This is Trump getting worse. The staged photo of an op while he played golf, lying about it, boasting about it. This is a new low.

It can be objectively confirmed that he was golfing at the time. Who is going to call him out on that?

Goebbels

Actually shifts the equation—less religious fanaticism, more failed personality cult with side order of entrapment.

Some friends I’ve known since the early 80’s used to own a ranch on the ridge overlooking Healdsburg from the west; They’re probably relieved that they sold a few years ago, but they wouldn’t agree that they’re somehow favored by God and the buyer is being punished.

Jax Teller, Sons of Anarchy, killed himself in the final episode. Because the alternative was the rest of his life in prison, and the rest of his club being punished by other clubs for what he’d spent the whole last season doing.

(but he made sure his kids were well out of the way first)

Specifically per press pool he left the Whackfuck Course 3 minutes after the start of the operation.
